DevOps Engineer in love with instant feedback loops and highly available/auto-scalled systems. 20+ years Linux and Open Source enthusiast, that was installing Perl even on Windows Servers. Accidental developer, who can code in any languages (as long as it's not Basic), performance optimization specialist (usually hunting for IO or Java GC issues), and security freak - always concerned the topic doesn't get the attention it deserves.
Docker base images - Ideas how to manage them on scaleConference
Containerization in the form of Docker images is on the market for almost 10 years. It addressed many problems, allowing developers to move with confidence, letting go of the need to care about environment stability. In this way, building and managing Docker images has started to seem like a solved problem, with more articles available about best practices than anyone is able to read.
But, as with any technology, it has its pros and cons. The immutability of images provided stability, but at the same time became a nightmare for any security team. You try to follow best practices, but even then, you might end up in an odd place where things just don’t fit. Using a few examples as case studies, Tomasz will show how he and his team challenge best practices to create custom solutions that work for their needs.
