Mateusz Trawiński
SimCorp

For the last 5 years I’ve been engaged in promoting various Agile frameworks. Currently I work in SimCorp as a Senior Engineering Manager for a two great full stack development teams. My vision of leadership can be shortened to one sentence: use proven knowledge on people and process to create a learning organization. Prior to my current role I worked as a Scrum Master where I was engaged in Agile framework implementation within the companies I worked for and for external clients. Before I got fascinated with Scrum I took part in a scientific research project that focused on the impact of neuroscience research on contemporary society which resulted in me being a co-author of a book “Suicide of Enlightment. How neuroscience and new technologies impact human world” (Samóbójstwo Oświecenia? Jak neuronauka i nowe technologie pustoszą ludzki świat).

In my free time I’m a passionate rock and alpine climber (depends on the season).

Your Team as Learning Organization. How To Thrive as a Engineering Manager by Focusing on Five Uneasy Areas
Conference - Short (ADVANCED level)
Room 3

You've become (or aspire to become) an engineering manager. Now what? Where do you start? How do you focus on delivering results? How can you help your team grow? How can you balance long-term and short-term goals? How do you manage various conflicting expectations?

When I was promoted to an engineering manager role, these questions and many more were on my mind.

In this presentation, I'll share my personal insights on navigating this significant career change, drawing on Peter Senge's "The Fifth Discipline." I'm deeply convinced that a leader's path can be guided by harnessing five disciplines: Personal Mastery, Mental Models, Shared Vision, Team Learning, and Systems Thinking.

I'll demonstrate how you can practically apply and continuously rediscover your individual motivation, the motivation of your team members, and team dynamics. I'll combine this with knowledge of how we can enhance cross-functional collaboration through Systems Thinking and promote a shared sense of purpose with a compelling vision.

This talk is also an opportunity to challenge ingrained assumptions about a leader's role. With it, managers can cultivate an environment where team members feel empowered to learn from failures and celebrate successes. I'll encourage you to rethink your approach to your team and its structure—treating it not only as an organization focused on delivering business results but also as an environment that fosters learning for everyone, including you.
